Improving Truck Fuel Economy

Truck Fuel Economy

Being the owner of a vehicle you are sure to have noticed the price of gasoline and diesel fuel. The prices earlier this year were at a record high, while now they seem to be going back down to a somewhat decent price. Car and truck fuel economy has ways to get better and is improving. There are a few things that you can do on your own to improve the fuel economy and gas mileage of your vehicle. If you're in the market for finding a new vehicle you should look at the fuel economy ratings to see if it'll fit with your family.

Trucks have different features that will create different gas mileage. The transmission of a vehicle makes a huge difference in the gas mileage. An automatic transmission will use more gas than a manual transmission. An automatic transmission causes the engine to rev up higher than at a manual, which in return causes the vehicle to go through more fuel. A 4x4 truck also uses more fuel than a 2WD truck.

There are a few accessories that you can purchase and install on your truck to improve the fuel economy. Most trucks are purchased without any tonneau cover or topper. The tailgate is also usually a solid tailgate that catches the wind. With an open bed and a solid tailgate you are bound to gather a lot of wind pulling in the bed. What you want to do is to find accessories that will help the wind to flow over and through the truck. Placing a tonneau cover onto the bed of the truck will cause the air to flow smoothly over the bed instead of pulling the truck down. If you don't like the idea of having a tonneau cover on your truck you can always purchase an airflow tailgate. An airflow tailgate has openings to allow the wind to flow through freely. Often times the outdoors type of man likes to have a truck. These men usually like to haul their hunting dogs in the back of the trucks and there is nothing easier to haul a dog in as a topper. A topper should be level with the top of the cab of the truck. If you want a topper that is taller than the cab of the truck you will want to make sure that the front of the topper is slanted and allows the wind to flow over the top of it.

One of the best ways to find the best truck fuel economy is to watch any truck commercial on the television. You will usually find that trucks offering fewer options will have better gas mileage than the trucks that come "fully-loaded". It is best to do your research before you make any purchases. Along with watching commercials on television you should ask previous or current owners of the type of truck you're looking what their overall ratings are of the truck. From owners of the trucks you will be able to find out what they like most and dislike the most about that truck. You won't find that kind of truth in a television commercial. Search online to see if there are any recalls or any mechanical problems found in the truck that you're interested in. By doing your homework and research you will be able to find the best truck with the best fuel economy for you and your situation.
